Positive change

Positive change

AT WADI DAWKAH, POSITIVE CHANGE MEANS TAKING CONCRETE AND PURPOSEFUL ACTIONS TO IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS OF THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE AND TO ENHANCE ITS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

WE FOCUS ON THREE CORE PILLARS:

PRESERVING BIODIVERSITY

We are committed to preserving biodiversity and improving Wadi Dawkah’s habitat in tangible and measurable ways. To achieve this, we monitor trees’ health while addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, illness, insect infestation, and parasites. We also aim to better understand the trees’ genetics and their environment, study the existing wildlife, and implement an accurate and methodical water management approach.

SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Wadi Dawkah and the surrounding communities share a deep connection. Our goal is to support and enhance this special relationship. All our harvesters are locally hired, highly skilled Omanis, who bring best-in-class expertise to the craft. As we develop Wadi Dawkah, we remain committed to creating additional employment opportunities, further benefiting the local community.

SUSTAINING AN ANCIENT CRAFT

Frankincense harvesting is an ancient technique, passed down through generations. At Wadi Dawkah, we aim to preserve this craft while incorporating current scientific knowledge and insight. All our harvesters are trained in sustainable practices. They follow precise guidelines on the number, depth, size, and frequency of the taps. Additionally, the trees are given a rest period over the summer to recuperate between harvests.

THE SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Wadi Dawkah Scientific Advisory Council brings best-in-class Omani experts together with international specialists to deepen the understanding of Wadi Dawkah’s biodiversity and environment, ensuring that day-to-day practices are guided by scientific rigor. It is composed of:

Suaad Al Harthi

Executive Director, Environment Society of Oman

“Frankincense or luban has been highly regarded throughout time and up to present day due to its cultural and heritage value and the important properties that it holds for medicinal use, perfumery and anti-aging. It has been a long-standing mission of the Environment Society of Oman to encourage the sustainable use of frankincense so that it may be preserved for generations to come. In setting up this Council, Amouage is taking a concrete step to ensure that sustainability is embedded within their operations and doing their part to safeguard this UNESCO World Heritage Site.”

Dr. Khalid Al Farsi
Head of Horticulture

“Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a habitat for Boswellia sacra (the Frankincense tree), which is considered an integral part of Oman’s culture and heritage. The site hosts thousands of Luban trees, the majority of which have grown naturally for many years. It has become essential to enhance sustainable efforts in the cultivation and production of Frankincense in the region. The aim of this council is to provide scientific advice on various sustainable aspects, such as maintaining site biodiversity, improving plant establishment and cultivation practices, and fostering community engagement.”

Dr. Laila Al Harthy

Head of Botany and Conservation

''Wadi Dawkah is a remarkable testament to the resilience and importance of frankincense in Oman's natural and cultural heritage. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Council, I am deeply honored to contribute to the preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Our collective efforts are focused on preserving its ecological integrity while promoting sustainable practices for future generations. The council's collaborative approach ensures that Wadi Dawkah remains not only a living repository of biodiversity, but also a symbol of humanity's longstanding relationship with nature. Together, we hope to inspire global recognition and stewardship of these irreplaceable treasures.”
